Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 24, 2026

MindIsland is made by Ham Technologies, LLC. It is built so that what you write stays on your phone: there are no accounts, no ads and no tracking. This policy explains what the MindIsland app and this website handle, what leaves your phone and why, and the choices you have. Questions are welcome at support@mindisland.net.

What stays on your phone

The app keeps the following on your phone only:

Your conversation with the companion is kept only in the app's memory while the app is open. It is not saved on your phone, and it is gone when the app closes.

This data is not included in your phone's iCloud or Google backup, so a phone set up from a backup starts without it. Deleting the app removes everything above.

The companion: what is sent, and what happens to it

The companion's replies are written by Google Gemini, an AI service. The first time you send the companion a message, the app asks whether you allow this, and nothing is sent until you choose Allow. You can change your choice at any time with Manage AI replies in the companion.

When you send a message, the app sends the following to our server, which passes it on to Google Gemini to write the reply:

Your check-ins, notes, sessions and reflections are never sent.

Our server handles each request in memory and does not store your messages or the replies: it keeps no record of what you write. Google receives each request from our server, not from your phone, so it does not see your IP address.

Google processes the request under its Gemini API terms for paid services, which say that Google does not use the messages or replies to improve its products. Google keeps them for 55 days, only to detect and prevent abuse, keep its service secure and meet legal requirements. If Google's safety systems flag a message or reply, authorized Google staff may review it. Google may process them in any country where it or its agents have facilities. See Google's Gemini API terms, Gemini API usage policies and privacy policy.

Messages about being in danger

Every message is checked on your phone for signs that you might be in danger. When a message looks like one, the reply comes straight from the phone, with crisis contacts (including 988 in the U.S.), without waiting for the AI, and that message is not sent at that moment. If you keep talking afterwards, it is part of the recent conversation sent with your next message, so the companion can respond with care.

Hold-to-talk dictation

If you hold the microphone button, your phone's own speech-recognition service turns what you say into text in the message box. On iPhone, the app asks for this to happen on the device. On Android, the phone's speech service is used; depending on your phone and its settings, it may process the audio on the device or send it to the provider of that service (usually Google). MindIsland never receives or stores the audio. The text is sent only if you send the message, as described above.

Guided sessions and sounds

Session audio and the pet's sounds are part of the app and play on your phone. Nothing about the sessions you play is sent anywhere.

Connecting to our server

The first time you open the companion, the app gets an anonymous identifier from our server — a random value that is not linked to your name, email address or phone. The app keeps it in the phone's secure storage and sends it with each companion message, so our server can tell requests apart and limit how many messages can be sent each minute. For the same reason, our server counts requests from each IP address. Each count lasts one minute and is held only in memory: our server does not save the identifier or your IP address, and does not pass either to Google. The identifier expires after 180 days, and the app then gets a new one. On iPhone, the phone's secure storage (the keychain) can keep the identifier after the app is deleted, and the app uses it again if you reinstall it.

Our server is hosted by Railway. Like any hosting provider, Railway may keep standard technical logs, such as the IP address and time of a request, to run and secure its service.

What we don't do

Deleting your data

Everything MindIsland keeps is on your phone, and deleting the app removes it (on iPhone, apart from the anonymous identifier described above). There is nothing to delete on our server, because it stores none of your messages or app data. Google keeps its copy of companion messages for 55 days, as described above, and we cannot delete it sooner. To stop companion messages from going to the AI, open the companion, choose Manage AI replies, and turn it off.

This website

mindisland.net is a static website. It sets no cookies and runs no scripts, analytics or trackers. It is hosted by Cloudflare, which may keep standard technical logs, such as IP addresses, to run and secure its service.

Adults only

MindIsland is for adults, 18 and older. It is not directed at anyone under 18, and we do not knowingly receive information from people under 18. The companion relies on Google's Gemini service, whose terms require that it not be offered to people under 18.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes too, and important changes will be explained on this page.
